Discovering the Jewel of the Atlantic

On this day, we have an experience in store for you that you won't soon forget.
If you love watching Ushuaia and its exceptional landscapes,
If you dream of relaxing on a sandy beach with turquoise waters,
If picture-postcard landscapes are what you're looking for on your holiday,
then you've come to the right place.
Here, you won't need to cross the Atlantic.
The island we're about to praise is just fifteen kilometres off the Vendée coast.
This little piece of land is just 23 km², so it's easy to visit.
In fact, we strongly advise you to visit it by bike.
Head for L'Île-d'Yeu, where the horizon splits in two: the sky and the ocean.

visit to the island of Yeu

All aboard!

There are only two means of transport to get to the Ile d'Yeu:
Boat or helicopter.

If you choose to go by boat, there are two landing stages in the Vendée: Fromentine and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. If you're staying at the Moulin de la Salle campsite, we recommend you choose the latter. It's only a 35-minute drive from the campsite.

A word of advice:
You can also take advantage of the summer shuttles that run between Les Sables-d'Olonne and Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. This way, you can avoid traffic jams and parking problems, which can be complicated in Saint Gilles Croix de Vie in high season.
To make the most of your day, choose the earliest departures.
The route is governed by the Compagnie Vendéenne. You'll enjoy a 60-minute crossing. 60 minutes to admire the ocean and its flora and fauna.

Prices: €43.60 per person for a return trip departing from Saint Gilles Croix de Vie.

How to visit the island

There are several options for touring the island.
You can choose to take the minibus or the little train (for a guided tour). Both options offer a complete tour of the island and allow you to see the main sights.

However, for greater freedom and to get the most out of these exceptional sites, we strongly advise you to opt for a bicycle! What better way to get around in warm, sunny weather than by bike?

In Port Joinville, where you will disembark, there are numerous shops offering two-wheeler hire.
So that you can see the main points and above all so that you don't get lost along the way, here's an itinerary that we really like.

The bike tour

The island covers an area of 28 square kilometres and is fairly flat. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced hiker, you'll love the trails.
Discover this jewel of the Atlantic at your own pace.

Tip: if you want to hire your bikes directly on the island, we advise you to reserve your bikes in advance!

Your visit begins in Port Joinville. The town's administrative centre is home to the town's many shops, restaurants and bars.
This is also where you can buy picnics.
But you'll also find plenty of restaurants if you prefer to sit back and relax.

We'll start the tour by heading up towards the north of the island. You'll pass a number of beaches.
Continuing on your way, you can visit the Grand Phare. This building stands proudly on the edge of the ocean and is open to visitors. Climb the steps for a 360° view of the island.
There'll be no respite for your legs as soon as you get off, you'll have to get back on your bike.

After a few pedal strokes, you'll discover the pretty cove known as Plage des Sabias. If you want to take a break, this is the place to stop! Its turquoise waters and intimate setting make this cove a paradise. Put your towel down for a few moments before hitting the road again.

To continue, head for the Old Castle. This fortress offers guided tours. You can find out more about the castle and its history.

Keep following the paths and you'll come across the charming little Port la Meule.
Here, you can choose to cut across the island to shorten your walk, or continue along the ocean.

After a day full of discoveries, it's time to take the boat back to the mainland and the Moulin de la Salle campsite.
